Knitting at The Wool Sanctuary

10 Dec

If you cast your mind back to November you might have noticed that in my post about Things I Plan To Make I mentioned that I was doing some knitting classes with Susie at The Wool Sanctuary in Weston-Super-Mare.

Well on Sat 28th November me and my knitting comrade, LB, headed off to learn to knit! The Learn To Knit 1 class covers:

  • Casting On
  • Cast ing Off
  • Knit
  • Purl
  • Increase and Decrease
  • How to read a basic pattern.

I made a little square place mat/coaster using increasing and decreasing and then I did some homework on my moss stitch and made this pin cushion.

Progressing....

Finished the knitting! Now I just need to sew and stuff.

After loving every second of Learn to Knit 1 we could not wait for Learn to Knit 2!  Luckily we only had to wait a week and on Sat 5 December we headed off to Susie’s to learn:

  • Working with colour
  • Intarsia
  • Fairisle
  • Kntting with beads or sequins
  • How to follow a more complicated pattern.

After a bit of confusion (mostly due to the fact that I forgot how to count to five) and some abuse about my colour choices (personally I like fuchsia and burnt orange!) we managed to get the hang of it all 🙂

I will take some pics of my samplers once I have ironed them!

But spurred on from Susie I have embarked on making my own Knitted House Door Stop as featured in the title sequence of Kirstie’s Homemade Home.  So without fear I started!  Then I unraveled it all as it was pants!  Then I started again this time thinking about what I was going to do next!

Kit all ready to go!

Half a front door

The ground floor completed

Front of house FINISHED!

So now all I need to do is the roof, the back, 2 sides, the bottom and the roof overlay!

If you are really interested in my knitting and the progress of my house check me out on Ravelry.

And if you are thinking “I thought she was making those striped wrist warmers!”  I am!  I have the wool, I have the instructions!  What I don’t have is the skills to tackle the thumb gussets!!! (WOOP WOOP Ooo Err Missus!)

Hopefully between my Mum and Aunties they can sort my gussets out over Christmas!

Heaven in fabric

9 Dec

If you are a fan of Amy Butler fabrics you will love these!!!

This is Heather Bailey’s new collection, Nicey Jane!  I think that a big percentage of my Christmas money will be spent on some HB fabrics!!!!

Heather also has a brilliant blog which you can find at http://heatherbailey.typepad.com/.

Stay tuned for some Heather B-esque creations as soon as my parcel of goodies arrives 🙂

Recently a few of All That Glitters creations have been featured on Cuteable.com and the Sew Scrumptious blog!

The lovely Lynsey at Cuteable.com picked the Button Up Necklace in Rainbow for their Flickr week pick of the MISI pool!

Button Up Necklace - Rainbow

I’m afraid to say that some lucky person snapped up the Rainbow version at the MISI event on saturday!  But fear not you can still get the Button Up necklace in Blue!

Louise from Sew Scrumptious was my ‘neighbour’ at the MISI event and she bought one of my teacup pin cushions for her Mum’s 70th birthday.  She is on a mission to get 70 presents for her and the teacup pin cushion made prsent number 41!  You can follow her quest here.

After a very big discussion involving many people from around the room Louise went for the Spring Martini rather than the Pink Daisy.

Teacup Pin Cushion - Spring Martini

Even thought Louise bagged herself one there are still a few left on MISI including another one in Spring Martini!  (Can you tell it’s my favourite!)

Stall

The All That Glitters stall at the MISI Event

I have now recovered enough to report back on the MISI Makers Bristol event which took place on Saturday.   It was a long but FANTASTIC day.

The first 100 people through the doors grabbed themselves a nice swag bag in what seemed like 5 minutes!  It was busy all day long and a big HELLO! to everyone who stopped by to see us.

But I got it wrong again!  All the things I thought would sell didn’t and all the things that I thought wouldn’t did!  I just can’t seem to guess what you crazy public want!

From a personal point of view it was great to meet some more MISI sellers and to see the Bristol lot again!  And it was lovely to spend the day with my MISI neighbours Susie from The Wool Sanctuary and Louise of Sew Scrumptious.  And a HUGE thank you to Cherri Burelle florists for the gorgeous flowers in All That Glitters colours 🙂

Here are a few photos from the day:

Are you sitting comfortably?  Then we will begin…

Back at the start of September Mr Sparkles and I went on a camping trip to Wales.  Where we came across the CRAFT recycling shop in Aberystwyth and purchased 4 lovely but slightly sad dining chairs!

Mmmm old pleather!

Mmmm old pleather!

So being that cracked poo brown pleather just isn’t going to go with our new decor I decided to re-upholster the seats!  I can remember helping my mum do her diningroom chairs when I was about 10 so it’s can’t be that hard!?!?

On a trip to Ikea a few weeks ago we picked out 2 different materials to use to cover the chairs.  I lost my striped material as someone thought it looked like old man’s pyjamas!  It doesn’t!  But we chose these in the end:

So off on the internet I went to see where to get some new padding – CONFUSION ENGULFED ME!  Silly me thought that it would be obvious, it wasn’t 😦

So I ‘Phoned a Friend’ or as it’s otherwise known posted a message begging for help on the MISI Forum!   A HUGE THANK YOU to Mo of  Mornie G Jewellery and Belinda of Pretty Little Things for their excellent advice.

So armed with my shopping list I set out to find a shop that stocked all I needed.  Low and behold Dunelm Mill in Weston-Super-Mare came up as the ideal shopping emporium for this adventure!

Not wanting to go all the way to W-S-M and the store there be tiny I yet again seeked the knowledge of fellow MISIers on the MISI Forum.  Sadly, mixed reviews but i decided to risk it.  I’m an adventurous soul at heart 🙂

Sunday afternoon armed with my printed out Google Map (sadly the dead SatNav still hasn’t been replaced) I set out in a Weston type direction.  Then remembered that the Portway (one of the main route out of Bristol on to the M5) was shut!  Disaster! My map was now useless!  But I went for it anyway!  Following the signs for Weston down through a million oddly named villages I eventually got to W-S-M and without getting too lost, I found it!

Like a great grey & green beacon in the wilderness

Like a great grey & green beacon in the wilderness

I was there for 2 hours!  Luckily I knew I would be and had left Mr Sparkles at home watching football 😉  So I ended up buying:

  • 2 x foam block (£4.50 for a bit 100cm x 56cm x 3cm )
  • 1m of wadding (£1.99 for 137cm Width / 200g weight)
  • 3 bits of Christmas material (£3.99 / meter)
  • 2 bits of polycotton (there is a plan for this to be revealed!)
  • 4 mirrored candle plates (99p each)
  • a wire mannequin (£7.99 to be used on my stall at the MISI event)
  • and a plastic box to keep it all in when I got home!

Note to MISI Forum bods:  well worth a visit!  I could have spent a lot more but I had filled my little basket!  But fear not I have a shopping list prepared for my second visit already 🙂

So last night after losing the will to live doing the weekly shop I set to on one of the 4 chairs.  And here is the final result:

One of Four

One of Four

Not bad for a first attempt!  My lovely shiney new staple gun was a life saver.  So I’ve cut out all the foam, wadding and material for the other 3 which I hope to do tonight.

But then that might all change as we are off to see our Solicitor to sign stuff for our new house which will hopefully also involve a completion date!!!!

KEEP YOUR FINGERS, TOES & ANYTHING ELSE CROSSED!!!!
